Question

What is osmoregulation and how it is maintained in the human body?

Open in App
Solution

Osmoregulation

  1. Osmoregulation is the active regulation of the osmotic pressure of an organism's body fluids.
  2. This osmotic pressure is exerted by all the solutes dissolved in the fluid against the membrane which is impermeable to them.

Osmoregulation in the human body:

  1. The human body contains osmoreceptors for osmoregulation.
  2. Osmoreceptors help in the detection of osmotic pressure.
  3. These receptors detect and send signals to the brain.
  4. In response brain releases vasopressin which in turn regulates the water and electrolyte loss
  5. It maintains the fluid balance and concentration of electrolytes to keep the fluid isotonic.
