Osmosis is the process in which solvent molecules pass through a semi-permeable membrane from an area of higher concentration to an area of lower concentration.
The process continues until the quantity of fluid is balanced or equalized in both regions.
Osmosis is a kind of diffusion. E.g. unicellular freshwater organisms and plant roots absorb water by osmosis.
The entry of water into a cell is called endosmosis, movement of water outside the cell is called exosmosis.
