Fossils:

  1. Fossils provide a geographical record of evidence for biological evolution.
  2. Fossils refer to the remains of plants and animals that lived in the past and whose bodies were buried in the sediment of sand or mud under ancient seas and lakes.

Paleontology:

  1. The branch of science that deals with the study of fossils are called paleontology.
  2. The fossils of Archaeopteryx served as the connecting link between birds and reptiles and helped in concluding that birds evolved from reptiles as they had both feathered wings like birds and teeth and tails like reptiles.

Hence, Palaeontology refers to the study of fossils.
