What is particle theory?

Open in App
Solution

Particle theory:

  • It describes the microscopic properties of atoms (or molecules) and their interactions, which result in observable macroscopic properties (such as pressure, volume, and temperature).

Postulates:

  • All matter is made up of tiny particles known as atoms.
  • Particles of matter are constantly in motion.
  • Particles of matter attract each other.
  • The Particles of matter have space between them.
  • Atoms of the same element are essentially identical and atoms of different elements are different.
  • The degree to which the particles move is determined by the amount of energy they have and their relationship to other particles.
  • As temperature increases, particles of matter move faster.
