Solution

Parturition in animal husbandry:

  1. The process of delivering a fully grown fetus from the female uterus after completion of the normal pregnancy (gestation) period is known as parturition.
  2. This is a very critical management phase in the production of livestock as it requires a hefty amount of caring and management.

Phases of parturition:

  1. Preparatory stage: During this stage, the female prepares to give birth.
  2. Expulsion stage: During this stage, the uterine walls begin to contract more intensely with increased force, hence pushing the fetus into the birth canal.
  3. Cleaning stage: After parturition, the fetal membranes and another afterbirth must be flushed out from the uterus, retention of which can lead to serious illness or even death of the mother.
