Question

What is peristalsis?

Open in App
Solution

Peristalsis:

  1. The semi-digested food in the mouth will become a soft ball-like form called bolus.
  2. This bolus swallows and reaches the stomach through a pipe called esophagus.
  3. The contraction of muscles present in the esophageal wall produces a wave-like motion which facilitates the movement of bolus through the esophagus. This wave-like movement is called peristalsis.
