Question

What is photochemical decomposition? Write one application of this example.

Open in App
Solution

Photochemical reaction is a decomposition reaction ( a reaction in which a single compound decomposes into 2 or more elements or compounds) which takes place in the prescence of sunlight.
Some reactions do not take place in the dark but take place only in the presence of light or some other radiation. Such reactions are known as ‘photochemical reactions’. For example:
Photosynthesis of HCl gas:
H2 (g) + Cl2 (g) + hν ——————-> 2 HCl (g)
Light is a form of energy. Hence it provides the necessary activation energy for the reaction to take place.

The photochemical decomposition of silver chloride (AgCl) and silver bromide (AgBr) is used in black and white photography.

2AgBr -> 2Ag + Br2
2AgCl -> 2Ag+ Cl2
