In biology or human geography, population growth is the increase in the number of individuals in a population. Population processes are typically characterized by processes of BIRTH and IMMIGRATION, and of DEATH and EMIGRATION, which correspond to the basic demographic processes and broad environmental effects to which a population is subject. The birth and immigration increase the net population number whereas death and emigration tend to decrease the net population number.
