Potable water is the water which is suitable for drinking purposes. Hence, potable water is also called as drinking water.

Potable water should meet certain requirements so that it is absolutely fit for drinking.

  • Harmful chemicals should be absent.
  • pH should be between 5.5 and 9.5
  • Potable water should be colourless, odourless and tasteless.
  • It should be free from disease-causing microbes like coliform bacteria. Coliform bacteria are found in human excreta and are responsible for diarrhoea in human beings.
