Question

What is precipitation? In what ways it is necessary to us?

Open in App
Solution

Precipitate: To form an insoluble compound either by reacting two salts or by changing the temperature to affect the solubility of the compound. Also, the name given to the solid that is formed as a result of a precipitation reaction. Ex:
AgNO3(aq)+KCl(aq)AgCl(s)+KNO3(aq)
AgCl (solid) is the precipitate formed and AgCl prepared can be used for other purposes.

Uses:
Precipitation reactions can be used for making pigments, removing salts from water in water treatment, and in the classical qualitative inorganic analysis.
Colour of Precipitate will help predict the anions or cations involved in the reaction.
Production of various compounds (even in industries) can be done using this reaction.
Water is made drinkable by various processes, one of the steps involves removal of dissolved salts using this reaction.
General trend of some salts can be identifies using these reactions.
