What is primary treatment in sewage treatment plants?

Open in App
Solution

Sewage treatment

Sewage treatment is a sort of wastewater treatment that eliminates impurities from sewage to produce an effluent that is appropriate for discharge to the environment or reuse, eliminating water pollution from raw sewage discharges.

Primary treatment in sewage treatment

  1. The first treatment is defined as the “removal of a portion of the suspended sediments and organic components from the sewage.”
  2. Allowing sewage to run slowly through a basin causes heavy sediments to sink to the bottom and light solids to float to the surface and be skimmed off.

Usage of sewage treatment

  1. The purpose of primary treatment is to settle material by gravity, remove floatable objects, and reduce pollutants so that secondary treatment may be completed more quickly.
  2. The purpose of primary treatment is to reduce the Biochemical Oxygen Demand (BOD) and Total Suspended Solids (TSS) in wastewater (TSS).
