Question

What is produced by the oxidation of food during respiration?

Open in App
Solution

Respiration:

  1. Respiration is the process of release of energy by breaking down food molecules(glucose) that are stored in the body cells.
  2. There are two types of respiration: Aerobic respiration and anaerobic respiration.
  3. The majority of animals and plants release energy from food by aerobic respiration.
  • .Aerobic respiration:
    • The process of liberation of energy during the oxidation of food molecules in presence of oxygen is known as aerobic respiration.
    • During respiration in addition to energy(ATP), carbon dioxide gas and water molecules are formed.
    • Aerobic respiration follows the following equation:

C6H12O6 + O2 CO₂ + H2O + ATP.
(Glucose) (oxygen) (carbon dioxide) (water)
