Raffinose:
- It is a trisaccharide containing glucose, galactose, and fructose.
- The chemical formula of raffinose is C18H32O16.
- It belongs to the family of oligosaccharides(Raffinose family oligosaccharides-RFOs).
- They are found in plants and seeds like legumes, whole grain, cabbage, asparagus, molasses of beetroot, etc.
The function of Raffinose:
- They serve as desiccation protectants in seeds
- They act as transport sugar in phloem sap and as storage sugar.
- It can also bean used as an anti-freezing agent.
- Raffinose present in molasses of beetroot is used in the production of some kind of brown sugar.
