Rainfall can be defined as precipitation in liquid form. Rainfall is difficult to predict. If w e don’t have much then we’re running out of water. If we have too much, we will have severe flooding.

Types of Rainfall

Rainfall has been classified into three main types based on the origin

  • Convectional rainfall
  • Orographic or relief rainfall
  • Cyclonic or frontal rainfall

Types of Rainfall based on Intensity

The types of rainfall based on intensity can be classified as:

  1. Light rain – Rate of rain varies between 0 to 2.5 millimeters
  2. Moderate rain – Rate of rain varies between 2.6 millimeters to 7.6 millimeters
  3. Heavy rain – Rate of rain is beyond 7.6 millimeters.
