Question

What is Raoult's law? How can molar mass of a non-volatile solute be determined with its help?

Open in App
Solution

Raoult's law states that the vapor pressure of a solvent above a solution is equal to the vapor pressure of the pure solvent at the same temperature scaled by the mole fraction of the solvent present.
Psolution=χsolventPosolvent
The molar mass of a non-volatile solute be determined by using following equation.
P0PP0=W2M1W1M2
P0= vapour pressure of pure solvent
P= vapour pressure of solution
W2= Mass of solute.
M2= Molar mass of solute.
W1= Mass of solvent.
M1= Molar mass of solvent.
