Question

What is recombinant DNA technology? What is its importance?

Open in App
Solution

DNA recombinant technology is a technique where the selected DNA of one organism is introduced to combine with the DNA of another organism acquires the genetic abilities of the donor. The vector plasmid and the desired gene are isolated. The vector is cleaved with the same restriction enzyme which was used for the cleavage of the gene. The gene is inserted into the vector to synthesize the recombinant form of DNA in which there are the different combination of the genes. The vector may be introduced into the host cells and the products of the gene can be obtained in large amounts.
The importance of this technique:
  • The production of transgenic or genetically modified crops which can provide more yield and disease resistance.
  • Production of transgenic animals with more amount of milk and meat production.
  • Production of bacteria which can act as decomposers of chemicals.
