Question

What is the remainder theorem?

Open in App
Solution

Remainder theorem:

If p(x) be any polynomial and 'a' be any real number. Then, when p(x) is divided by the linear polynomial xa, then the remainder will be p(a).

Example:

Let polynomial is p(x)=x2+6x+4 and it is divided by a linear polynomial x-2.

So, the remainder will be p(2) which is computed as:

p(2)=22+(6×2)+4p(2)=4+12+4p(2)=20

Hence, If p(x) is divided by the linear polynomial (x-a), then the remainder is p(a).
