The respiratory quotient can be defined as the ratio of the volume of carbon dioxide evolved to the volume of oxygen consumed by an organism, tissue or a cell and is given by; RQ = CO $_{2}$ evolved/ O $_{2}$ consumed. It denotes the amount of substrate used by a tissue, cell or an organism.
