Rice was the first cereal crop whose genome was sequenced. The rice genome is well mapped and well characterised.

The International Rice Genome Sequencing Project (IRGSP) began in 1997. The participants of the workshop agreed to share resources and annotate DNA sequence to public database. It included 11 nations. The sequencing is on same lines as for large scale genome sequencing projects.
