RNA stands for ribonucleic acid. RNA consists of long chain of nucleotide units. Each nucleotide consists of a nitrogenous base, a ribose sugar and a phosphate group. Its main function is to transmit genetic information from the DNA of the cell to the cytoplasm.
The basic function of RNA is to direct protein synthesis. The code on mRNA is used to synthesize a particular protein. tRNA helps in bringing the amino acids and rRNA helps in the formation of ribosomes on which proteins are synthesized.
