HCl in the stomach:

  1. HCl stands for Hydrochloric acid.
  2. During digestion, various gastric juices are secreted from gastric glands.
  3. Along with these gastric juices, hydrochloric acid is also secreted from gastric glands.
  4. During digestion due to activation of parietal cells, hydrochloric acid gets secreted.

Role of HCl in Stomach:

  1. Due to the release of hydrochloric acid in the stomach, the pH of the stomach tends to decline in a range of 1.5 to 3.
  2. This acidic condition is required for microbial digestion to prevent microbial diseases.
  3. As in this acidic environment, many microbes get killed.
  4. It is also helpful for the digestion of food particles.
  5. One of the important functions it's to activate pepsin.
  6. Pepsin is a gastric juice that digests proteins in the stomach.
  7. Hydrochloric acid in the stomach is also essential for the absorption of vitamin B12.
  8. And Vitamin B12 is necessary for functioning and maintaining RBCs and Nervous tissues.
