Question

What is root pressure? How is it useful to the plants?

Open in App
Solution

  • Root pressure is the hydrostatic pressure within the cells of a root system that causes sap (water and solutes) to rise through a plant stem to the leaves.

  • It helps the plants in re-establishing the continuous channel of water molecules in the xylem vessels through cohesion.

  • It helps in the transportation of cell sap in the upward direction i.e., from roots, to stem and to the leaves against the gravitational force.
