What is rusting? What conditions are required for the rusting of iron?

Rusting: The process due to which objects like iron nails, iron pipes, iron grills, and iron railings, when kept in moist air for a few days, get covered with a reddish brown powdery substance called rust, and this process is called rusting.

During the rusting of iron, iron metal combines with the oxygen in the presence of water to form a mixture called rust.

The two conditions, necessary for the rusting of iron are :

  1. Presence of oxygen.
  2. Presence of water or water vapor.
