  1. Scutellum is the one large shielded cotyledon of a monocot plant.
  2. It is a the first leaf of monocot plants.
  3. It is also known as first primordial leaf.
  4. It is present at the lateral side of the embryonal axis.

Function of scutellum:

  1. Provides nourishment to the developing embryo.
  2. Absorbs nutrients from the endosperm during seed germination.
  3. It synthesizes gibberellin hormones.

Example: Family Poaceae (wheat, maize).
