Sebaceous gland - The organ located in the dermis is known as a sebaceous gland.

The functions performed by the sebaceous gland are-

  1. They secrete an oily, wax substance known as sebum.
  2. Sebum waterproofs and lubricates the skin and hair of mammals.
  3. Sebum lubricates the skin to protect against friction and makes it more impervious to moisture.
  4. Sebaceous glands are usually attached to hair follicles and release a fatty substance.
