Primary metabolism
Primary metabolism is the synthesis of primary metabolites (small molecules) through a metabolic pathway. The primary metabolites are essential for the growth, development and reproduction of the plant.
Secondary metabolism
Secondary metabolism is the synthesis of secondary metabolites (small molecules).
Secondary metabolites are not essential for the growth, development and reproduction of the plant but can help the plant for other purposes like pest resistance. Toxins, alkaloids, antibiotics and biopolymers are example of secondary metabolites.
