Question

What is sewage? How does it pollute natural water bodies?

Open in App
Solution

  • Sewage is the wastewater that is released from homes, industries, offices, and other sources.

  • It is the liquid waste from domestic activities. Most of it is water, which has dissolved and suspended impurities.

  • Sewage is a major source of plant nutrients, mainly nitrates and phosphates.

  • Excess nitrates and phosphates in water promote the growth of algae, sometimes causing unusually dense and rapid growths known as algal blooms.

  • This can eventually result in eutrophic dead zones where aquatic life cannot survive because of a lack of oxygen.
