Question

What is the shearing angle?

Open in App
Solution

Shearing angle

Shear angle is the angle between the two surfaces that come together to shear the material.

In the given figure along the side, the shear angle is the angle made by the shear plane with the direction of the tool travel. It is denoted by ϕ.

Chip: The small amount that is removed from a hard material.

Workpiece: The hard material is known as a workpiece.

Shear plane: Shear stress, which is highest along a plane called sharing angle, is produced when the metal in front of the tool is crushed.

Chip velocity is affected by the shear angle plane.

For two-dimensional cutting operation, the shear angle is given by an equation.

tanϕ=rcosα1-rsinα, where r=the cutting ratio and α=rank angle

When the shearing angle is high, the shearing plane becomes smaller which means the lower shear force, cutting force, power, and temperature.
