What is significance of finding gram equivalent weight

Equivalent weight is the relative mass of the material which depends on the stoichiometry of the reaction, so that, “one gram equivalent of any material reacts with one gram equivalent weight of other material.” But, remember, that, equivalent weight have no space in SI system, despite, it is seen to be used, even today, in many qualitative calculations, one of the reason for that is, it gives straight forward 1:1 ratio between reactants.
