What is silver nitrate test?

Open in App
Solution

Silver nitrate test is carried out to detect the type of halide ion in a given solution.
The solution is first acidified by adding dilute HNO3 followed by silver nitrate solution. F,Cl,Br & I react as given below.
Ag+(ag)+F(ag)AgF (No precipitate as it is soluble.)
Ag+(ag)+Cl(ag)AgCl(s) (white precipitate.)
Ag+(ag)+Br(ag)AgBr(s) (pale cream precipitate.) precipitate.)
Ag+(ag)+I(ag)AgI(s) (pale yellow precipitate.)
The precipitate is treated with NH3 solution to confirm the halide. The following observation is done.
AgCl dissolves to give a colorless colution.
AgBr dissolves in conc NH3 to give a colorless solution.
AgI Insoluble in NH3 of any concentration.
