Question

What is the SNOW rule? Explain the purpose of the SNOW rule.

Solution

Definition

According to SNOW principles, if current flows from southwards to northwards in an electric circuit, as well as a magnetic compass, would be put across the conducting cable, the needle of either the compasses tries to deflect westward.

Purpose of SNOW rule

  1. Determine the magnetic field direction produced by the current-carrying wire.
  2. Whenever the current travels from southwards to northwards, the magnetic field lines wrap around the conductor from east to west. As a result, whenever the compass pointer is put well above the conductor, it moves to that same west.

Therefore, the rule's objective was to determine the directions of the magnetic field created by the current transporting conductor.
