Sanitary landfills are sites where waste is isolated from the environment until it is safe. It is finally brought out when it has completely degraded biologically, chemically and physically.
The process that is followed in sanitary landfills are as follows:
Each day's trash is compacted, covered with a layer of 15 cm of soil to reduce infiltration, impermeable liners at bottom to prevent leakage of leachate. Finally the matter is brought out when it is considered as safe.
