Solidarity was a trade union formed after the 21 point agreement with the government. It was the first time an independent trade union had been formed in any of the communist states. Within a year, it had swept across Poland and consisted of more than one crore members. Revelations of widespread corruption and mismanagement in the government made it worse for the rulers. It was formed by Lech Walesa, a former electrician on Lenin shipyard who was dismissed in 1976 for demanding higher pay.
