Question

What is specific gravity??

Open in App
Solution

Specific gravity has nothing much to do with gravity as a force, rather specific gravity is actually another name for Relative Density.

Now what is Relative Density?

Relative density is the density massvolume

of one substance with respect to another fixed substance.

Relative density of substances is calculated with respect to water. Therefore mathematically we can define relative density as :
drev=dactualdwater

drev

  • drevis relative density.
  • dactual
  • dactual is the density of the substance
  • dwater
  • dwateris the density of water.
Hope this helps you
