1. Alcohols are the hydrocarbons that contain the Hydroxyl group ($-\mathrm{OH}$) as a functional group. For example Methanol$\left({\mathrm{CH}}_3\mathrm{OH}\right)$, Ethanol $\left({\mathrm{C}}_2{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}\right)$, etc.
2. Ethanol $\left({\mathrm{C}}_2{\mathrm{H}}_5\mathrm{OH}\right)$when obtained by improper distillation usually contains a large amount of Methanol$\left({\mathrm{CH}}_3\mathrm{OH}\right)$. This solution is called Spurious alcohol.
3. When consumed it has the potential of serious consequences resulting in brain and liver damage and ultimately death.
4. It can be used as a solvent.
