Suppose, we need to locate the decimal 4.36 on the number line. Now, we know that the number is between 4 and 5 on the number line. Now, lets divide the portion between 4 and 5 into 10 equal parts.

Then, it will represent 4.1, 4.2 ......... 4.9 . Now we know that 4.36 lies between 4.3 and 4.4. Now, lets divide the portion between 4.3 and 4.4 into 10 equal parts. Then, these will represent 4.31, 4.32, 4.33, 4.34, 4.35, 4.36 .......... 4.39.
So, we have located the desired positive number on the number line. This process is called the process of successive magnification.
