Question

What is the absolute mass and charge of a proton?

Open in App
Solution

  • The mass of protons is similar to the mass of a hydrogen atom.
  • As one hydrogen atom consists of a proton and an electron and we know that mass of an electron is negligible. So, mass of hydrogen atom is equivalent to the mass of a proton.
  • Mass of Proton = 1.676×10-27kgor1.676×10-24g.
  • Protons are positively charged, they have an equal but opposite charge to that of the electron.
  • Charge of a proton =+1.602×10-19Coulomb
  • Therefore, the absolute mass of proton=1.6×10-27kg and absolute charge of the proton is 1.602×10-19coulomb.
