Question

What is the amount of heat required to heat 1kg of ice from 10oC to 5oC?

Open in App
Solution

Heat required to change the temperature of ice from 10°Cto0°C=mcΔT=θ1 [specific heat capacity of i.e = 12cal/gm/°C]
θ1=1000×12×10 = 5000calories
Heat required to melt ice = mL = θ2 [Latent heat of fusion = 80cal/gm]
θ2=1000×80 = 80000calories
Heat required to convert temperature of water from 0°Cto5°C = mcΔT=θ3
θ3=1000×1×5 = 5000calories
Total heat required =θ1+θ2+θ3
=5000+8000+5000=90000calories
