Solution
The apparatus used for the electrolysis of water is called the Hofmann voltmeter.
Hofmann voltmeter is generally used as the small-scale electrolytic cell that consists of three upright cylinders.
To allow the addition of water and electrolytes the inner cylinder is usually open at the top.
The platinum electrode is placed at the bottom of each of the two side of cylinders where the source of electricity is passed via the positive and negative terminal connected to it.
When an electric current is passed via the Hofmann voltmeter then gaseous Oxygen is formed at the anode and gaseous Hydrogen is formed at the cathode.
Both the Hydrogen and Oxygen gas in water get displaces and collected at the top of the two outer tubes, where they can be collected with a stopcock.
