Question

What is the area of the plates of a 2 F parallel plate capacitor, given that the separation between the plates is 0.5 cm? [You will realisefrom your answer why ordinary capacitors are in the range of μF orless. However, electrolytic capacitors do have a much largercapacitance (0.1 F) because of very minute separation between theconductors.]

Solution

Given: The capacitance of the parallel capacitor is 2F and the separation between the plates is 0.5cm.

The capacitance of a parallel plate capacitor is given as,

C= ε 0 A d

Where, the permittivity of free space is ε 0 , the separation between the plates is d and the area of the plates is A.

By substituting the given values in the above formula, we get

2= 8.85× 10 12 ×A 0.5× 10 2 A=1130 km 2

Thus, the area of plates is very large so the capacitance should be taken in the range of μF to avoid this situation.
