Question

What is the average speed if a man travels 12 the distance at speed of 40 kmph, 13 the distance at 50 kmph and rest of the distance at 60 kmph?

Solution

Let the distance be d km.
Time taken for d2=(d2)40
Time taken for d3=(d3)50
Time taken for d6 (which is the balance distance) =(d6)60
Therefore total time taken =d80+d150+d360=d(45+24+10)3600=d(793600)hrs.
Hence, average speed =distance travelledtime taken
=d79d×3600=360079=45.57 kmph
