what is the basis of chromatography?

Open in App
Solution

  1. Chromatography - It is a technique for the separation of a mixture by passing it in solution or suspension through a medium in which the components move at different rates.

Basis of Chromatography :

  1. It is the method based on the difference in the rate of adsorption of various components of a mixture on a suitable adsorbent.
  2. Adsorption - It is the process of accumulation of substances on the surface of a solid medium. A common adsorbent is a strip of filter paper of good quality.
  3. In this process, the mobile phase contains the mixture that has to be separated and a solvent. This mobile phase is made to run over the stationary phase.
  4. Based on the affinity of the stationary phase with the component of the mixture, the components of the mixture travel different distances in a chromatographic column.
  5. Thus all components get separated from each other.
