Membrane Proteins:

  1. Membrane proteins account for around one-third of all proteins found in living organisms.

Membrane proteins are classified on the basis of ease of extraction into 3 different types of proteins:

  1. Integral proteins - integral membrane proteins that are permanently based or portion of the membrane
  2. Peripheral proteins - peripheral membrane proteins that are only partially connected to lipid bilayer or integral proteins
  3. Lipid anchored proteins - covalently attached to lipids embedded within the cell membrane
