Question

What is the bond order in O2+?

Open in App
Solution

Bond Order

  • Bond order is defined as one-half the difference between the number of electrons present in the bonding and the antibonding orbitals.
  • The mathematical formula is as follows,
  • Bond order (B.O.)=12 (number of electrons in the bonding orbitals) - (number of electrons in the antibonding orbitals)

Example

  • The electronic configuration is as follows
  • σ1s2,σ*1s2,σ2s2,σ*2s2,σ2pz2,π2py2,π2px2,π*2py1
  • Bond order of O2+=12 (number of electrons in the bonding orbitals) - (number of electrons in the antibonding orbitals)
  • Bond order O2+=12(10-5)
  • Bond order O2+=2.5
