What is the capital of Jammu Kashmir?
Jammu and Kashmir, a union territory of India (until October 31, 2019, a state), situated in the northern part of the Indian subcontinent has two capitals. Srinagar is the summer capital, that is in between the months’ May and October and Jammu is the winter capital that is in between the months’ November to April.
This practice of two capitals was started by Dogra king about more than a century ago to escape the harsh winter of Srinagar.
Srinagar which is situated nearly in the middle of the populated areas of Jammu & Kashmir is the most strategic place to control all the politics and functional working of the state. But during winters Srinagar becomes geographically challenging due to the blockage of National Highways and landslides. Thus every year the capital is shifted to Jammu to make sure that the trade and business do not suffer. Everything in the state goes well in a smooth condition.
