Question

What is the cause of Thalassemia ?

Open in App
Solution

Thalassemia is an inherited blood disorder caused by a mutation of the DNA of the Red blood cells. A defect is seen in the formation of either the alpha or the beta-globin gene formation during thalassemia. This mutation results in an abnormal form of haemoglobin, which leads to the destruction of the RBC's and anaemia. It is inherited in an autosomal recessive pattern.
