Hard water

  • Water that does not form lather with soap solution is called hard water.
  • The hardness of water is due to the presence of dissolved Calcium(Ca) and Magnesium(Mg) salts.
  • There are two types of hardness which are temporary hardness and permanent hardness.
  • The hardness of water due to the presence of dissolved Calcium(Ca)andMagnesium(Mg)bicarbonates is called temporary hardness. It is removed by boiling.
  • The hardness of water due to the presence of dissolved Calcium(Ca)andMagnesium(Mg)chloridesandsulphates is called permanent hardness. permanent hardness can be removed by adding Washingsoda(Na2CO3).
