Question

What is the charge of valency of carbon and silicon. Is it +4 or -4? Both have 4 electrons in its outermost shell. Will it gain electrons or lose electrons to complete the octet?

Solution

Carbon and silicon have a valency of four. Both of them do not gain or lose electrons to gain stability.

The energy required to remove four electrons from the outermost shell is exceptionally high. The addition of four electrons to the valence shells will make the atoms unstable due to interelectronic repulsion. So, instead of losing and gaining electr0ons, carbon and silicon share electrons which is known as covalent bonding.
