Question

What is the charge present on the hydrogen when a hydrogen bond is formed?

Open in App
Solution

Hydrogen bond

  • Hydrogen bond can be defined as the attractive force which binds the hydrogen atom of one molecule with the electronegative atom (F, O or N) of another molecule.
  • A dotted line (– – –) symbolizes a hydrogen bond, while a solid line signifies a covalent bond.

Example of hydrogen bond

The hydrogen bond in an HF molecule exists between the hydrogen atoms of one molecule and the fluorine atoms of another molecule, as shown below:-

Here, the hydrogen bond works as a bridge between two atoms, holding one by a covalent bond and the other by a hydrogen bond.

From the above diagram, it can be said that the charge present on the hydrogen when a hydrogen bond is formed is a partial positive charge.
