Question

What is the common difference in two consecutive members in a homologous series?

Open in App
Solution

Homologous series is a series of carbon compounds have the same general formula but differ by the length of a carbon chain. The chemical properties and functional group of members are similar in homologous series.

The common difference in two successive members in a homologous series is;

(i) The molecular formulas of any two consecutive members of homologous carbon compounds differ by the -CH2-.group.

Example: These compounds Methane (CH4) and Ethane (C2H6) are the successive members of the homologous series. They are differed by one carbon atom and two hydrogen atoms in the molecular formula.

(ii) The molecular weights of members of the homologous series differ by 14u by the previous number.
